A Queens native dedicated to serving the local and global community was given a warm welcome home this week.

Captain Daniel Kim of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) was welcomed back from his recent tour of duty in Afghanistan by Assemblyman Ron Kim at his Flushing office on July 13. Kim’s tour of duty began in November 2016 and ended last month.

Also an NYPD officer, Kim had been serving his community at the Bayside-based 111th Precinct when he was called back into active duty.

The Queens native presented the local lawmaker with an American flag flown during combat operations in his time in Afghanistan. The flag was flown by Sergeant Tyler M. Miles of the USMC over the United States Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, on May 2, 2017, according to its accompanying certification.

“It is powerful to see the amazing work our community leaders continue to provide to a place we call home,” Daniel Kim said. “It’s a blessing to be afforded the opportunity to have continued this service abroad in Afghanistan. Witnessing the dedication to duty of service members, my thoughts and prayers go out to all those abroad who are protecting our nation’s freedom. I feel fortunate to have returned home safely.”

Assemblyman Kim said he was thrilled to welcome home the hometown hero from his latest tour of duty.

“It is difficult to overstate the bravery and dedication that he and other members of the military show each and every day to protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans,” the assemblyman said. “Danny grew up in our local community, and is an NYPD officer in the same neighborhoods he was raised in. His hard work and sacrifices exemplify the very best of Flushing, Queens, and New York. My family and I are truly honored to be presented with this American combat flag from his tour of duty.”
