Schools reopen across Queens next week, and some Flushing families will be getting help in starting the new year off right.

The 109th Precinct will play host this Thursday to the Anti-Bullying Backpack Giveaway, which will take place on Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. in the rear of the precinct located at 37th Avenue and Union Street. The event will run one to two hours or until all supplies are given away and attendees are encouraged to show up early. All children who attend must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

In addition to providing back to school essentials to those who need them most, the event will also serve as an anti-bullying awareness event. Young attendees will be encouraged to speak out against bullying and informed on who to turn to when they or another student are being harassed or intimidated.

Over 800 backpacks have been provided by Healthfirst. The 109th Precinct’s Community Affairs Department and Community Council have donated various school supplies. The supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The backpack giveaway has become a district-wide, yearly event in Flushing, one in which local community members and institutions team up for a great cause,” said Jerry Filippidis, vice president of the 109th Community Council. “It is so important for us to help provide students the materials they need to succeed in school.”

Assemblyman Ron Kim, who coordinated the event, encourage the community to participate.

“I am proud that we are able to continue having this wonderful annual event, where we can give backpacks and now other essential school supplies to the students who need them,” Kim said. “Sometimes something as basic but crucial as a backpack can make all the difference in a young child’s education. As before, the theme of this giveaway is anti-bullying – any kid being threatened or bullied should not feel isolated or afraid to turn to someone for help.”
