These neighborhoods in Queens will be sprayed for mosquitoes tomorrow

Summer is winding down, but the city’s war on virus carrying mosquitoes is still going strong in Queens.

The Health Department will conduct its latest mosquito-spraying blitz in northern and southern Queens neighborhoods this Wednesday night, Sept. 13. Trucks will spray pesticide across parts of Auburndale, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Kew Gardens Hills, Murray Hill, Pomonok, Queensboro Hill, Howard Beach, Lindenwood, South Jamaica, South Ozone Park and Woodhaven.

The spraying will begin at 9 p.m. and will continue until 6 a.m. the following morning. If there is inclement weather, the operation will be rescheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14.

The north Queens spray zone covers the area generally bounded by Van Wyck Expressway, Long Island Expressway and Kissena Boulevard to the west; Cherry Avenue, 43rd Avenue and Northern Boulevard to the north; Utopia Parkway, Underhill Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard to the east; and Union Turnpike, Utopia Parkway and Jewel Avenue to the south.

The south Queens spray zone extends into several eastern Brooklyn neighborhoods, and is generally bounded by Atkins Avenue, Blake Avenue, Fountain Avenue, Betts Creek and Old Mill Creek to the west; Atlantic Avenue, Rockaway Boulevard, Cross Bay Boulevard, Belt Parkway, 114th Street and 109th Avenue to the north; Van Wyck Expressway, Belt Parkway, Lefferts Boulevard and Bergen Basin to the east; and Bergen Basin and Jamaica Bay to the south.

According to the Health Department, the areas listed above have an increase in West Nile virus activity as well as high numbers of Culex mosquitoes, which have been known to transmit West Nile virus. The trucks will be spraying very low concentrations of Anvil® 10+10.

When used properly, it poses no significant risks to human health. However, the Health Department advises that you stay indoors during the spraying.
