Man found hanging from a tree at Jackson Heights park on Christmas Eve

Police are investigating the death of a 57-year-old man who was found hanging from a tree in Jackson Heights on Dec. 24.

According to the NYPD, a witness walking by Rory Staunton Field Park at 79th Street at 7 a.m. saw the man hanging from a tree branch by a rope tied around his neck. The Daily News reported that the witness, 40-year-old Alex Piedrahita, said the man was wearing all black and was covered in a blanket.

The park is located across the street from I.S. 145 and next to The Garden School, a private school that serves nursery school students through 12th grade.

EMS responded and pronounced him dead at the scene. Police did not release the name of the man and the investigation is ongoing.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
