Correction officer shot at gunman who fired rounds at crowded Astoria street: NYPD

A gun fight occurred on an Astoria street on Sunday morning when an off-duty Department of Correction officer fired at a man who he witnessed shooting his firearm into a crowded area, it was reported.

According to police, the 27-year-old officer saw a man firing shots in front of Peter Cooper Florist at 28-02 Steinway St. at about 2 a.m. on March 4.

The gunman spotted the officer and began charging at him, police said. The officer discharged “an undetermined amount of rounds” in the vicinity of the suspect but no one was struck. The gunman fled the scene.

There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
