Public schools in NYC will close on Wednesday as another winter storm approaches (UPDATED)

While it may be the first day of spring, Queens finds itself under yet another winter storm warning from midnight tonight until 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 22.

According to the National Weather Service, a heavy mix of rain and snow will start to fall around midnight, with a likely chance of turning into snow, freezing rain, and sleet after 3 a.m. Temperatures will reach a low of 31 degrees with wind chill values between 15 and 25 degrees.

Wind speeds will reach 18 to 24 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 34 miles per hour. Little or no ice accumulation is expected.

On Wednesday morning, the previous night’s snow, freezing rain and sleet will become snow after 9 a.m. Temperatures will reach a high of 34 degrees with wind chill values between 15 and 20 degrees. Wind speeds will reach 28 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 45 miles per hour.

During this time, little or no ice accumulation expected and there will be a possible snow and sleet accumulation of 5 to 9 inches.

On Wednesday evening, snow will fall before midnight. Temperatures will reach a low of 32 degrees with wind chill values between 20 and 25 degrees. Wind speeds will reach 26 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 37 miles per hour. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is possible.

The sun will return by Thursday morning, bringing clear skies and temperatures up to 42 degrees.

All New York City district schools will be closed Wednesday, March 21 due to the impending weather. After-school programs, adult education, YABC programs, and PSAL activities are also cancelled.

SAT School Day administration will be postponed to Tuesday, April 24. Public hearings, including the meeting of the Panel for Educational Policy, are cancelled and will be rescheduled.

 

Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for vulnerable locations along the shorelines of southern Queens. The advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday morning to 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The New York City Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Department of Sanitation, today announced that Alternate Side Parking Regulations will be suspended on Wednesday, March 21, and Thursday, March 22 to facilitate snow operations. Payment at parking meters will remain in effect throughout the City.
