A rain barrel that collects storm water as it runs down a gutter.

Queens residents who want to beautify their home while protecting the environment can come to Glendale in June and pick up a free rain barrel for their lawn and garden.

State Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblyman Mike Miller have teamed up with the city’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to give away barrels to those who pre-register for the June 16 event online. The barrels will be available for pickup between 10 a.m. and noon at the Yeshiva Godolah Seminary, located at 74-10 88th St.

Anyone who doesn’t pre-register may come between noon and 1 p.m. to pick up a limited number of rain barrels that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each 55-gallon plastic rain barrel attaches to a rain gutter to collect and store excess rainwater which homeowners can then use to water their plants, clean their sidewalk and perform other chores.

he rain barrels that will be given away are 55-gallon plastic barrels that attach to a rain gutter to collect and store excess water during periods of rainfall. That rainwater can then later be used to complete outdoor chores, rather than using water from a garden hose.

“When residents use rain barrels to capture excess rainwater, it can have a major impact on our environment here in the city,” said Addabbo, who is also ranking member of the State Senate Environmental Committee. “By using the stored rainwater for household tasks such as watering their garden or washing their car, residents not only preserve their drinking water, but they can also save some money on their water bills.”

“Every year I co-sponsor the rain barrel giveaway event with Senator Addabbo and DEP to help our constituents become more eco-friendly,” Miller added. “This event gives the community the opportunity to learn the many benefits of using a rain barrel. I’m looking forward to another successful giveaway and advise those interested to sign up soon because the rain barrels go quickly.”

Visit this website to pre-register for a rain barrel. For more information, call Addabbo’s Howard Beach office at 718-738-1111.
