The Bayside community will have the opportunity to see up-and-coming tennis pros play for a chance to qualify for the US Open once again when a growing tournament makes its return to the North Shore Tennis and Racquets Club this weekend.

The Bayside Open on Friday, June 22 to Sunday, June 24 will mark the third straight year of the United States Tennis Association sanctioned event. This year, two days were added to the tournament and lower ranked players had to be eliminated to make way for higher ranked pros who were interested in competing.

A total of 36 top-seeded players will all compete for $3,000 in cash prizes and a shot at playing in the US Open in Flushing in September.

Gregg Sullivan, chairman of — which will broadcast the Bayside Juniors Open — said the tournament has put Bayside “back on the map” in the international sports world.

“It’s a significant upgrade for Bayside’s profile and a huge contribution to Bayside and Northeast Queens’ self-image and pride,” Sullivan said in an email to QNS.

There will also be a number of local Bell Boulevard restaurants serving food on the grounds during the tournament, and the well-known clubhouse bar will be open for the first time during the tournament to serve drinks to spectators, Sullivan said.

The tournament from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the weekend at the North Shore Tennis and Racquets Club located at 34-28 214th Place in Bayside, and admission is free to the public.
