Flushing Town Hall, as a part of the most ethnically diverse county in the nation, announced its vibrant and cultural summer activities last week at a news conference.

The Main Street venue presented preview performances from “The Colors of Friday” by Teatro SEA and a demonstration of Silleta flower-making to highlight the Flower Festival (Festival de las Flores). These preview performances along with the scheduled events throughout the summer are meant to illustrate Flushing Town Hall’s mission to offer global arts for a global community.

“This summer will feature a dynamic array of arts and culture for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience,” Flushing Town Hall Executive and Artistic Director Ellen Kodadek said at the June 25 event. “At Flushing Town Hall, we continue to share global arts with a global community by presenting a diverse selection of programming and the summer is no exception.”

In attendance at the kick starter to the summer events was a Colombian senator, Ivan Dario Agudelo, who spoke no English but had a volunteer translate for him.

A big supporter of global arts, Agudelo had traveled from Colombia to participate in some of the events. The senator made sure to note how important it is to remember that although we are of different backgrounds, we are all one.

“Thank you for representing our culture and looking for better opportunities for the Latinos,” Agudelo told the people who worked to make inclusive activities at Flushing Town Hall.

Not only did the senator allude to the need for the support of immigrant cultures at this time, but Kodadek did as well.

“Particularly at this time in history, it’s important to showcase and celebrate the contributions of diverse cultures and the immigrants and migrants who comprise the fabric of our borough, our city and our nation.” Kodadek said.

Some of the activities include education on the Matinecock tribe of Queens and Long Island, Afro-Peruvian drumming on July 27, Full Moon performances from Chalaw Basiwali, a native Taiwanese singer/songwriter, and much more.

This season, Flushing Town Hall is opening its doors to teenagers for free. Under the “Teen Access Program,” all 13- to 19-year-old boys and girls will be welcome to attend any performance. This program is designed to foster a love for arts and culture for kids. Otherwise, tickets can be purchased at www.Flushingtownhall.org or by calling (718) 463-7700.

Kodadek describes the summer seasons events as “a celebration of diversity and cultures that break down borders and unifies us.”
