The Covenant Lutheran Church on the corner of Catalpa Avenue and 60th Lane in Ridgewood.

An independent Catholic parish in Ridgewood that was recently asked to leave its host church has found a new home for its services in the neighborhood.

The All Saints American Old Catholic Community will now hold its masses and provide services for the poor and homeless at the Covenant Lutheran Church on Catalpa Avenue and 60th Lane, according to Father Mike Lopez, pastor of All Saints. The parish will hold its first mass at Covenant Lutheran this coming Sunday, Sept. 16, at noon.

For the past five years, All Saints had an agreement with the Ridgewood Presbyterian Church on 70th Avenue where Lopez held weekly masses, used the kitchen and storage space to provide meals for the less fortunate and parked the parish-sponsored Hungry Monk Rescue Truck community response vehicle.

When Ridgewood Presbyterian began receiving complaints about the behavior of the homeless men that All Saints serves, the church told All Saints to vacate the space by Sept. 4.

“We have been offered many new locations to do our work, but we feel a deep responsibility to the poor and forgotten of Ridgewood,” Lopez said in a press release. “We are grateful to Covenant Lutheran for taking us in, and for the outpouring of support we have received from around the country.”

Reverend Michael Ross, pastor of Covenant Lutheran, said that Lopez came to him to discuss a possible partnership and Ross quickly agreed, having known Lopez for a long time. He said that he looks forward to helping Lopez and All Saints in whatever way he can, and explained that the church has worked with the homeless in the past and seen its share of misbehavior from them, too.

That’s part of it, but they’re not all bad, and a couple of rotten apples don’t have to spoil it for everyone,” Ross said.
