A Maspeth school has received national recognition for its work with its students and its overall performance.

Maspeth High School is one of 349 schools that were honored as a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School. The Maspeth school will be honored in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, which recognizes the school as one of New York state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or national tests.

“I’m pleased to celebrate with you as your school is named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives. Congratulations on your students’ accomplishments and for your extraordinary commitment to meeting their unique needs.”

For 36 years, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized more than 8,800 schools for the hard work of educators, families and communities who create a safe and welcoming environment where students can engage in the educational content. Schools are chosen based on their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“Maspeth High School is a great school with a wonderful staff and plenty of opportunities for young people,” said Siobhan McGlone, who children who attended Maspeth High School and served on the school’s PTA. “It’s a very clean school, and the staff is always very helpful.”

“”It’s an incredible honor to be recognized for the hard work that our staff does for the community,” said Keith Powell, who serves as the United Federation of Teachers Chapter Leader for Maspeth High School. “We’re doing right by our students and its an honor that the federal government is recognizing us for it.”

On Nov. 7-8, the Department of Education will host an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., to celebrate this year’s National Blue Ribbon schools.

“The mission of Maspeth High School has always been to establish ourselves as an institution of excellence by providing the highest possible quality of education to the students of New York City,” said Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir, founding principal of Maspeth High School. “We are humbled by this incredible honor, and we look forward to continuing to serve our students and their families for the foreseeable future.”
