Put on your comfiest running shoes and head out for a day of running, prizes and fun in Bayside.

On Sunday, Oct. 28, the Bayside Historical Society will be hosting their 17th Annual Totten Trot 5K Foot Race & Kids’ Fun Run in the historic Fort Totten Park. Winners of the races will receive cash prizes and trophies to celebrate their victory.

Starting at 9 a.m., race participants will traverse through the USA Track & Field (USATF) certified course, which takes walkers and runners along the scenic Little Neck Bay waterfront. The 5K starts and ends at the landmarked Officers’ Club, home of Bayside Historical Society.

Runners will get to pass through the renowned historic district and see buildings that date back to the late 1800s. The course also includes a loop out onto Little Bay Path to the Throgs Neck Bridge before circling back to the Fort.

At 10 a.m., kids age 12 and under are encouraged to dress up in their best Halloween costumes and take part in the Kids’ Fun Run. Children will be grouped by age and do short distance sprints, with all participants getting cookie “medals” at the end of the races. A $50 gift certificate will also be awarded to the child with the best costume.

Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded to the top three overall male and female winners in the 5K. First, second and third place medals will be given to each of the male and female winners in the nine participating age groups: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80 and over.

Awards are set to be presented in the ballroom of “The Castle” accompanied by breakfast and live music. Antique cars and trucks will be on display and guests can participate in a raffle to win gift certificates from local merchants. All participants will receive complimentary goodie bags filled with gifts and coupons from event sponsors and businesses.

Races begin at 9 a.m., but participants should show up at 7:30 a.m. to register. Click here to sign up for the race, which costs $30 from now until Oct. 13, $35 until Oct. 27 and $40 on the day of the event. The first 150 registrants and those who sign up before Oct. 13 will get a free T-shirt.

All proceeds from the race will go toward funding for programs, resources and maintaining “The Castle” which served as the former Officers’ Club at Fort Totten.
