Candid shots of New York City subway riders on the 7 train will be displayed at the Queens Public Library Flushing branch on Dec. 14.
Passengers on the subway line, also known as “The International Express,” are the subjects of a new photo exhibit, “Faces of The 7 Train,” shot by Drew Kerr, who used nothing more than an iPhone.
Kerr spent six years secretly photographing riders on the 7 train as it rattled from Manhattan’s Times Square to Flushing and back.
“Faces of The 7 Train” features 32 black-and-white photographs culled from hundreds of shots of riders going to work, spending time with their families, thinking, laughing, and of course, sleeping.
“I perfected a technique of quietly and quickly taking pictures with the aid of a little misdirection,” said Kerr, who grew up in Flushing and Howard Beach. “I hopped from car to car in search of interesting subjects, doing my ‘photographic dance’ until I captured what I needed.”
Over the six years on the 7 train, only one person stopped Kerr — a public relations consultant at Four Corners Communications who also mentors LaGuardia Community College students — from taking a photograph. He was not hurt during the incident.
“Faces of The 7 Train” will be on display through Dec. 3, 2019.
