Murray’s Cheese, the Greenwich village specialty meat and cheese shop, will be opening a new location in Long Island City in the spring of 2019.

According to a representative from Murray’s Cheese, the company recently signed a lease right under Jackson Park, at he new luxury residential building at 28-10 Jackson Ave.

The representative wasn’t able to tell QNS the exact square footage of the space or when exactly it will open in the spring.

But the new space will be split between a restaurant with a full bar and a store selling their famous cheese, prepared foods and specialty items.

What makes Murray’s cheese unique is that it is made in cheese caves. The dark and damp environment of caves have been utilized for cheese-making purposes for centuries in countries like France and Italy. Murray’s claims that they were the first cheese-makers in the United States to adopt the practice in 2004. Although cheese caves remain uncommon in the states they have grown in popularity. Crown Finish Caves in Brooklyn, Wegman’s supermarket in Pittsford, N.Y. and the Caves of Faribault in Minnesota all cultivate their cheese in caves now.
