Apartment fire in Jamaica kills leaves two the day before Christmas Eve: FDNY

One man is dead and another is fighting for his life after a fire broke out inside their Jamaica home on Sunday afternoon, authorities reported.

According to authorities, at 3:07 p.m. on Dec. 23, officers from the 103rd Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a fire at a home on 150th Street between 95th and 97th Avenues.

FDNY personnel were on the scene and recovered two residents from the second-floor apartment, who have been identified as 64-year-old David Hawkins and 86-year-old John Wigfall, both of whom were unconscious and unresponsive.

Both victims were rushed by EMS to Jamaica Hospital, where Hawkins was pronounced dead. Wigfall ultimately succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the FDNY marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
