A Briarwood man has been charged with fatally stabbing his daughter’s boyfriend in his own home during an argument last week.
Marco Ortiz, 45, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted, he could face 25 years to life in prison.
“This is a sad and disturbing case,” said District Attorney Richard A. Brown. “The defendant is accused of resorting to violence when arguing with his daughter’s boyfriend. This was a senseless act of violence that has undoubtedly torn a family apart. The defendant now faces prison time for his alleged actions.”
On Thursday, Jan. 24, authorities were notified of a stabbing at an apartment building near 139th and Main streets in Briarwood. When police from the 107th Precinct arrived, they discovered 31-year-old Travis Ford with wounds to his face and abdomen.
Prior to the attack, Ford and Ortiz, the father of the victim’s girlfriend, had engaged in verbal altercation that turned physical. During the scuffle, Ortiz pulled out a knife and stabbed Ford. A report said that the fight was allegedly over Ford’s drinking habits.
Ford was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he later succumbed to his abdominal wound.
Ortiz is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 8.
