The Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing is extending its application deadline for the 2019 NYC Master Composter Certificate Program to Monday, Feb. 11.

The QBG NYC Master Composter Certificate Program trains a select group of New Yorkers every year to support, develop, and maintain community-based composting projects across the five boroughs.

The program teaches people a variety of skills and provides knowledge necessary to not only understand the process of composting but why composting is important, its benefits to soil health and community, according to Project Manager, Elsa Higby.

The course requires 24 hours of classroom instruction, two field trips, 30 hours of compost-related fieldwork, and a final project.

The course covers the following topics:

  •          Soil, decomposition, and compost science.
  •          How to design and build a variety of compost systems suitable for urban areas.
  •          How to start and manage a composting project in your community.
  •          How to use finished compost.
  •          Techniques for teaching others about composting.

“This program is a really wonderful opportunity to begin to engage in the organics recycling network in New York City,” said Higby. “Both physically with actual composting sites and community composters, but also to gain the tools and resources necessary to increase organic recycling citywide…it’s just a really wonderful entry point into the world of organics recycling in New York City.”

The QBG 2019 Master Composter Program will be held at the garden located at 43-50 Main St. Flushing on Thursdays March 21 and 28; April 4, 11, 18, 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sundays April 7 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Two field trips will be mandatory and  scheduled in addition to class time. The course fee is $40.
