In a rematch of the February Special Election, Julissa Ferreras has, according to unofficial election night polling, won the opportunity to again represent the communities within Council District 21 for the next four years.
This primary election night Ferreras defeated Eduardo Giraldo 66 percent to 34 percent, receiving 2,484 votes to his 1,283.
Dominican-American Ferreras had previously beat Colombian businessman Giraldo by a margin of four-to-one for the council seat vacated by now Senator Hiram Monserrate.
“Once again the voters of the 21st district have spoken. I am excited that they have given me another vote of confidence to continue working for our families,” said Ferreras, who will continue as councilmember in parts of Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.
The race between the two candidates was uneventful until both sides began slinging mud. Each candidate defended themselves from the charges raised by the other’s campaign.
In the end, Giraldo believes that the low voter turnout may have sealed his fate.
“It didn’t go well for me. I thought I had done better,” said Giraldo, who throughout Election Day had sounded optimistic about his chances. “With only about 3,800 voters of a registered 50,000 actually coming out to vote it is unfortunate that not more people came out to vote.”
