A middle-aged man whose body was found floating in the East River on the Whitestone waterfront on Friday morning was reported missing days earlier, police sources said on Tuesday.
While the NYPD did not disclose his identity, sources familiar with the investigation said the man had been reported missing five days earlier on Nov. 13. His death is now being investigated as a possible suicide, it was noted.
Law enforcement sources said the discovery was made at about 8:41 a.m. on Nov. 18 in the vicinity of Powells Cove Boulevard and Second Avenue near Whitestone Point.
Officers from the 109th Precinct and EMS units responded to a 911 call at the location and pulled the unconscious and unresponsive man out of the water.
The man, who appeared to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene; his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, according to police.
The investigation is ongoing.
