Councilmember Eric Gioia last week introduced a bill to translate New York City’s official website (www.nyc.gov) into at least six languages.
“This bill will use 21st Century technology and private sector know-how to make government cost less and work better,” said Gioia. “The city of Philadelphia translates its website into 12 languages for a mere $3,399 a year. New York City is the capital of the world. About 170 languages are spoken here, and we are a magnet for visitors across the globe.”
Cities such as Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Las Vegas, Dallas and Houston already translate their official websites.
According to Gioia, in 2003, 16 percent of all official city websites in the United States offered foreign-language translation, and that number is going up every month.
