Monique Dixon’s eight-month crusade in her son’s name came to an end last week as Governor George Pataki signed into law legislation to strengthen DWI penalties.
Vasean’s Law, made official at the boy’s former school, PS 165, toughens provisions of the Penal Law pertaining to the death or injury caused by a driver who is drunk or impaired by the use of drugs. Under Vasean’s Law, the driver may be charged with a felony.
“…The power of a mother’s love is strong and never-ending,” said Assemblyman Brian McLaughlin, a sponsor of the law. “It can move mountains…and lawmakers to protect their children. So while we mourn the loss of Vasean, and are saddened by the injury to his buddy, Angel, we know that from their horrific accident, the suffering of other DWI victims and their families will not have the extra burden of a justice system without justice.”
Pataki also signed into law legislation that increases the punishment of drivers who flee the scene of a deadly car accident.
Thanking the media for their commitment to the cause, Vasean’s mother Monique Dixon told The Queens Courier, “It is satisfying to know that everything we’ve worked for is accomplished and to know that I was able to keep my promise to the people who have supported me during this time. It’s overwhelming.”
