Burglars steal appliances from new homes

They took everything but the kitchen sink.
During three recent robberies at newly built homes in Bayside and Little Neck, burglars snatched new household appliances - fridges, stoves, and dishwashers - totaling thousands of dollars.
Police believe that neighbors might not have noticed the thefts at the unoccupied homes because workers habitually entered the construction sites to work. As of Tuesday, February 20, no one has been arrested for the break-ins.
According to police reports, Saturday, February 10, burglars broke into a building site at 202nd Street near 45th Avenue, stealing a refrigerator, stove and dishwasher. On Thursday, February 8, thieves took a four-burner range stove and fridge from a home on Thornhill Avenue and 252nd Street, and on Wednesday, February 7, burglars stole a fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and wine cooler from a construction site at 43rd Avenue and 207th Street.
In two of the three instances, burglars used force, either by pushing open a side door or smashing a window, to get in, but in one of the burglaries, suspects are believed to have entered through an unlocked rear door.
Officers from the 111th Precinct emphasized the need to lock doors and close off construction sites, so that burglars cannot get in.
“Everybody should secure their properties,” 111th Community Affairs Officer Gary Poggiali said. “Homes should be secured, whether you are selling a house or on vacation.”
Police asked residents to call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious persons or activity at nearby construction sites, or if they believe a burglary has happened or is in progress. For building violations and to report an unlocked construction area, neighbors are advised to call 3-1-1.
