Are your kids looking to get in shape - for free - over the summer?
The City Parks Foundation has announced the opening of a new season of CityParks Sports. The annual program offers kids aged 5-16 lessons in golf, tennis and track & field free while emphasizing the development of self-esteem, discipline and sportsmanship.
Young athletes will have the opportunity to receive instruction in all three sports at Alley Pond Tennis Center, Kissena Park, Baisley Park, Cunningham Park, Brookville Park, Flushing Memorial Field, Forest Park, Astoria Park, Juniper Valley Park, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Mario Fajardo Park and Detective Keith L. Williams Park.
Tennis and track & field will run from July 2 to August 14 and participants must register at each park once the program is in session. Children will learn the basics of track & field and compete in events such as hurdles, relay races, long jump and javelin throw.
Tennis instruction will be on three skill levels: Peewee (ages 5-7), Beginner (ages 8 and up), and Intermediate (determined by ability), with tournaments held at the end of the season for beginner and advanced players.
Kids also have the option of golf lessons in neighborhood parks as well as local golf courses in two four-week sessions. The first beginner session starts on July 2 and runs through August 1, and the second session starts on July 30 and runs through August 29. Intermediate programs will also be available through the Intermediate Program and the Junior Golf Academy. Participants must pre-register online on the City Parks Foundation website.
