Neighborhood Vigils Mark 11th Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 Terror Attacks

Over the last week, communities across the Times Newsweekly’s coverage area paused to remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at memorial ceremonies and candlelight vigils marking the 11th anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Center and the attacks on the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Shown in the top and center left photos are images of the crowd of thousands at Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village who participated in a candlelight vigil on Tuesday night, Sept. 11. The Tribute in Light can be seen in the background of the top image. At center right, prayers were offered during Tuesday’s memorial service at Remsen Cemetery Park in Forest Hills honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Rain moved Maspeth’s annual Sept. 11 memorial ceremony from Maspeth Memorial Park to the nearby headquarters of Squad Co. 288/Haz-Mat Unit 1 last Saturday, Sept. 8. As shown in the bottom left and center photos, the crowd offered music and other tributes to all the victims of the attacks, especially the 343 firefighters who were killed in their rescue efforts. At bottom right, dignitaries, first responders and local residents offered a moment of silence to 9/11 victims during a ceremony at the Glendale Sept. 11, 2001 memorial garden at Dry Harbor Playground on Sunday, Sept. 9.
