Crime took a nosedive in the 110th Precinct last year, the precinct’s commander reported during Thursday night’s 110th Precinct Community Council meeting in Corona.
Deputy Inspector Christopher Manson told attendees about an overall 7.5 percent crime reduction. The precinct is most pleased with its reduction in homicide, which decreased from eight in 2014 to one in 2015, and burglaries, which were down by 37 percent.
Manson attributed these numbers to the 5,000 arrests and 20,000 summons issued, which work as a safeguard to prevent serious crimes from being committed.
“It was a very good year for us; we targeted all the right things,” Manson said.
He also commends his officers for stepping up to the task at hand. He particularly commended Police Officer Justin Kellaher, who was awarded Cop of the Month for helping to save the life of an accident victim.
Kellaher, who has been with the 110th precinct for 11 years, came to the aid of a mother who was struck by a cement truck in Elmhurst last month. To stop her leg from hemorrhaging, Kellaher tied the straps of a defibrillator around her leg, preventing the woman from bleeding to death.
“He saved her life with his quick actions,” Manson said.
“It feels good that I was able to assist,” Kellaher said in receiving the award, which was donated by the Ridgewood Times and Times Newsweekly.
