Saturday figures to be a very sweet day in Sunnyside, as the community hosts a Flag Day parade and a strawberry festival.
Old Glory will be proudly waved among spectators at the community’s annual Flag Day march, which will begin at 11 a.m. at the corner of Greenpoint Avenue and 39th Street. It’s the only parade in Queens celebrating Flag Day, a national holiday observed on June 14 celebrating the stars and stripes.
The participants will head east on Greenpoint Avenue to Joe Sabba Park at Queens Boulevard and 49th Street, where a memorial service will be held.
Marching bands, school groups, community organizations and elected officials are all expected to participate in the parade, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside. The governor of the New York Kiwanis, Forbes Irvine, will serve as the grand marshal, according to the Sunnyside Post.
After the parade, all are invited to head on over to All Saints Episcopal Church’s annual strawberry festival, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 46th Street between Queens Boulevard and 43rd Avenue. Street vendors, baked goods and strawberry-themed treats are among the attractions.
