Local families celebrated a day of play in honor of Earth Day at Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans last weekend.

Residents gathered at the park, located on Merrick Boulevard, on April 20 for a day of celebration hosted by Council Member Nantasha Williams (D-27). Over 200 families were in attendance and participated in eco-friendly activities and discussions about preserving the environment.

The annual celebration offered an array of activities, including live music performances, interactive sessions with urban park rangers, and a global peace run. Kids also enjoyed games and activities that focused on composting, recycling, and plants. Attendees explored environmental conservation and learned about sustainable living.

Williams collaborated with state Sen. Leroy Comrie, Assemblymember Alicia L. Hyndman(D-29) and the New York City Parks Department to host the family-friendly celebration. Williams said the annual event is a great way for families to learn about protecting the environment.

This Earth Day celebration served as a platform to inspire individuals and families to take action towards protecting our planet. By coming together with our esteemed partners and the community, we can make a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable future for all.”

Comrie echoed Williams, saying that preserving Queens’ green spaces is crucial to families living in the borough. “We come together on Earth Day to recognize the importance of our planet and all it provides, from fresh air and clean water to produce and so much more. I hope we can all continue to learn to be better caretakers of our world so that future generations can live their best lives here.”

Earth Day is an annual event observed globally on April 22. Earth Day raises awareness about environmental issues and encourages people to adopt sustainable practices to preserve the planet’s natural resources.
