Episcopal Health Services (EHS) celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with its annual “Gospel on the Rock” event in Far Rockaway, on Thursday, Jan. 16.
The event held at the Far Rockaway Community Church of the Nazarene, brought together community members to reflect on Dr. King’s enduring message of unity, equality, and service through inspiring performances and heartfelt tributes.
The program, organized by EHS’ Office of Social Impact, opened with an invocation and welcome remarks from Rev. Dr. Les Mullings, Senior Pastor of the church. Rev. Mullings commended EHS for initiating the event, emphasizing the importance of honoring Dr. King’s legacy through community engagement.
Dr. Donald T. Morrish, MD, MMM, Chief Executive Officer of EHS, delivered a keynote address highlighting how Dr. King’s vision aligns with the organization’s mission. “Our commitment to your health and well-being goes beyond the walls of our facilities,” Dr. Morrish said. “It extends into the heart of our neighborhoods, where we strive to promote not only physical health but also the spirit of unity and compassion that Dr. King so passionately advocated.”
The celebration featured powerful musical performances by the Beraca French Seventh Day Adventist Youth Choir, Beth-El Church of God in Christ Choir, Challenge Charter High School Choir, and the Far Rockaway Community Church of the Nazarene Praise Team. Attendees were also treated to dynamic dance performances by the Challenge Charter High School and Middle School Step Teams, adding vibrancy to the program.
A reading of Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech by Michelle Burchette, EHS Lead Mammography Technologist, served as a poignant reminder of Dr. King’s vision for equality. The event concluded with a candlelight ceremony and closing prayer led by Pastor Asnel Valcin, EHS Director of Pastoral Care.
“Events like this remind us of the importance of embracing Dr. King’s values of equality, compassion, and service,” said Vanessa Nazario, EHS Chief Social Impact Officer. “At EHS, we are committed to fostering a workplace and community where these principles thrive.”
Expressing gratitude for the collaboration, Sharika Gordon, SVP & Chief People Operations Officer at EHS, added, “We’re incredibly grateful to Rev. Dr. Les Mullings and the Far Rockaway Community Church of the Nazarene for hosting this celebration. It embodies our mission of compassion and equity, inspiring us to continue uplifting our diverse community.”
Through “Gospel on the Rock,” EHS reaffirmed its commitment to serving Far Rockaway as a healthcare provider and a champion of unity and collective progress, reflecting the values Dr. King advocated tirelessly for.
