The Center Green at the Shops at Atlas Park became a hub of empowerment and resilience on April 24, when over 40 residents gathered for a dynamic self-defense training session hosted by Senator Joseph Addabbo in partnership with Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts of Glendale.

The event was held in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and served as a powerful reminder of the importance of preparedness, education and community support in preventing sexual violence.

The training session opened with an emotional and inspiring testimonial from a survivor named Michele, who courageously shared her personal journey of recovery.

Her story brought a human face to the issue of sexual violence, creating an atmosphere of resilience and support that set the tone for the rest of the evening. Attendees listened attentively, many visibly moved by her message of strength and survival.

Following Michele’s testimonial, Sensei Jason Lopez led participants through a high-energy, one-hour mixed martial arts training session. The class was carefully designed to be accessible to people of all ages, genders, and fitness levels. Participants learned fundamental self-defense techniques, including proper stance, awareness of surroundings, distance management, and basic strikes such as punches, kicks, and elbows.

The training emphasized building confidence, making quick decisions under pressure and responding effectively to threatening situations.

The second half of the session focused on close-range defensive tactics, where Sensei Lopez guided the group through interactive drills. These included methods for escaping grips and defending against ground attacks, simulating real-life scenarios in a controlled, safe environment.

The hands-on nature of the training gave participants the opportunity to internalize the techniques and build muscle memory that could prove crucial in moments of danger.

Throughout the event, approximately 10 instructors and assistant instructors from Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts were present to provide individual support and ensure proper technique and safety. Their guidance helped make the experience both physically challenging and emotionally empowering for all involved.

Each participant who completed the class received a coupon for a free week of martial arts training at Tiger Schulmann’s Glendale, sponsored by owner and manager Sensei Chris Iavarone.

“Do a little something every day to be ready for the one day you need it,” Iavarone advised, underscoring the importance of ongoing training and preparedness.

In addition to the physical training, attendees had the opportunity to speak with representatives from Safe Horizon and the NYPD Special Victims Division. These organizations provided valuable resources and information to help promote awareness, offer support services and encourage survivors to seek help.

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), an estimated 463,634 individuals aged 12 or older are victims of sexual assault each year in the United States. This alarming statistic highlights the need for education, prevention and survivor support.

“Empowering both survivors and community members is a crucial step toward reducing violence,” said Addabbo. “By providing accessible self-defense skills and information, we hope to foster a sense of safety and strength among vulnerable potential victims.”
