All 1,357 units at the Woodside Houses this morning lost access to heat and hot water today as a result of a boiler outage.
In an 11:30 a.m. press conference, the mayor announced that several NYCHA residences were having boiler issues due to the “bomb cyclone,” which dumped several inches of snow in the borough and wind speeds of up to 22 miles per hour.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and local elected officials visited the 20-building housing complex at 50-15 Broadway., just before 2 p.m. to check on the conditions. According to Sean Butler, spokesperson for Van Bramer, the boilers started running again at about 1:45 p.m.
A spokesperson for State Senator Jose Peralta said heat and hot water should be restored to all units by this evening. Officials also said that if some affected areas did not have heat restored, the city would establish a “heat center” in the complex.
Queens residents in Whitestone, Flushing and Bayside are also facing power shortages due to burning wires. Con Edison crews are working to restore power to the area.
