State OKs $4M chemical cleanup in Jamaica

By Bryan Schwartzman

The state Department of Environmental Protection plans to initiate a massive, $4 million soil clean-up project at a four-acre site in Jamaica that officials say was heavily contaminated by dry-cleaning chemicals.

Last week city and state officials discussed the cleanup at a meeting organized by the Brinkerhoff Action Association, a Jamaica-based civic group.

Officials said significant soil contamination is concentrated in the center of the former West Side chemical company site at 107-10 180th St.

Nearly 100 persons attended the meeting at St. Benedict the Moor Church on Brinkerhoff Avenue as DEC and Health Department representatives explained how the state plans to clean up the contaminants and discussed the chemicals
