This troublesome potential surfaced last month when a handful of Queens Assembly members attempted to oust Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan from his position as speaker of the Assembly. McLaughlin was an early member of this conspiracy and then apparently pulled back. Some columnists speculated that Silver threatened to turn the unions against McLaughlin unless he abandoned the effort to replace Silver.
