The Sea King Supermarket in Flushing had been open for only two weeks when it was robbed.
Sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, one or more burglars carved out a square in the roof of the building, shinned down the passageway and broke into a safe in the basement, stealing nearly $30,000 in cash, said Charles Larkin, a police spokesman.
The owner of the supermarket, an Asian specialty store at 144-50 Northern Blvd. that recently replaced C Town, came to work at 8 a.m. Monday and found the basement door open, said Jimmy Hong, the owner of the supermarket
