Party like it’s 2001 – at Queens Museum of Art

By The Times-Ledger

This first 2001 installment in the museum's popular First Thursday series provides guests with a great chance to renew old acquaintances while meeting new friends.

Make a New Year's resolution to attend First Thursday and spend a culture-filled evening with live music, dance, refreshments, games, giveaways, and of course, art. The QMA is currently displaying the major exhibitions Tiffany: Behind the Glass and Seductions and Games: Recent Video Works by Maureen Connor, among others.

Milen, the evening's disc jockey, will offer a wide assortment of musical favorites, as guests dance in the museum's spacious gallery overlooking the famed Unisphere. Also scheduled is a slide marathon featuring the works of local artists, with images projected continuously throughout the evening. Prizes will be given for the winners of a treasure hunt through the exhibitions, and hands-on art making will attract participants of all ages.

First Thursday is a free, after-hours, open house gala held the first Thursday of every month at the Queens Museum of Art. For more information, call 718-592-9700, Ext. 223. A free trolley shuttle will be available to escort First Thursday attendees from the subway station to the Queens Museum of Art.

The January First Thursday event is sponsored by Queens Museum of Art President Joan Barnes, with food provided by her restaurant, London Lennie's, and beverages courtesy of the Seagram Spirits and Wine Group.

The museum is located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, adjacent to the Unisphere. To visit the museum by subway, take the No. 7 Flushing IRT to the Willets Point/Shea Stadium stop. By car, take the Grand Central Parkway to the Shea Stadium exit, and follow the signs to the museum. Convenient free parking is available.
