The victory, which improved LIU's record to 4-12, 4-5, was the 1,000th win in the 72-year history of the school's basketball program.
Dobie, a 6-foot-1 guard out of McClancy High School, led the Blackbirds with 13.4 points and 4.3 assists per game in his first season with LIU last year, finishing second behind Wagner's Jermaine Hall in a tight race for NEC Rookie of the Year.
In the victory over the Red Flash, Forest Hills grad JaJa Bey from LeFrak City added nine points and six rebounds and former Rangers teammate Dawan Gary, also from LeFrak City, added six points and seven boards as LIU outrebounded 36-29.
Dobie was 6-for-6 from the line and the Blackbirds were a perfect 19-for-19 from the charity stripe.
Monday night LIU made it two straight wins as Dobie had 13 points and Gary chipped in with 12 as five Blackbirds scored in double figures in an 87-79 win over Robert Morris.
Another LeFrak City native, Connecticut freshman guard Taliek Brown, had 11 points against Miami Saturday, including an open three-pointer with 56 seconds left to cut the Huskies' deficit to 70-67, but Miami went on to win, 77-74, handing UConn its third straight road loss.
Cardozo grad Charles Cranford scored 29 points on 13-for-18 shooting to lead Northeastern to a 79-68 victory over Vermont Monday night.
Molloy grad Reggie Brown, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Flushing, had nine points on 3-for-8 from three-point range and a team-high four assists as Richmond defeated William and Mary, 60-57 Saturday.
Hillcrest grad and Jamaica resident Sherm Whittenberg scored a season-high 17 points off the bench Monday night for Marist, but it was not enough as the Red Foxes fell to defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champs Iona, 81-69.
Nashon McPhearson, a 6-foot-4 senior guard from Springfield Gardens, scored a team-high 12 points and had four rebounds for Western Kentucky in a 55-47 win over Louisiana Tech last Thursday.
Anthony Dulin, who teamed with Bey and Gary on the Forest Hills team that lost to Grady in the PSAL final three years ago, had 12 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line as Delaware State defeated Florida A&M Monday.
On the women's side, Richmond Hill resident Rebecca Tompkins, a freshman forward, scored a career-high 17 points in 28 minutes off the bench, but it was not enough as Manhattan fell to St. Peter's 92-80 Friday night. August Martin alum Leah Cromer, a 6-foot-3 senior center, had 12 points for the Peacocks.
Malcolm and Rhodes garner CUNY honors
Omar Malcolm, a 6-foot guard from St. John's Prep, and Florena Rhodes, a 5-foot-9 forward from St. Michael's, were named CUNY basketball rookie of the week, the conference announced Monday.
In John Jay's lone game last week, Malcolm scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. In two games for John Jay, the Queens native is averaging 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
Rhodes, also a Queens native, scored 28 points on 13-for-17 shooting, grabbed 12 boards and had seven steals for Lehman in a 97-80 loss to Hunter. Earlier in the week, she had a career-high 21 boards against New York City Tech. She is averaging 11.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
Queens natives leading Adelphi to No. 2 national ranking
Led by Breezy Point resident Ryan McCormick, a pre-season All-American senior guard, the Adelphi men's basketball team is off to a 13-0 mark, 9-0 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference, the best start in the 55-year history of the program.
McCormick, an Xavier grad, averages a team-high 16.9 points and 7.0 assists per game for the Panthers.
Also in the backcourt for Adelphi is sophomore Tony Kellman, a Queens native from Edison High School, who is averaging 9.9 points and 3.8 steals per game.
Jamaica native Kendell Craig, a junior swingman out of Holy Cross High School, is second on the team in scoring (15.1 points per game) and third in rebounding (7.0).
St. John's Prep grad Dwayne Thompson, a freshman forward from Cambria Heights, rounds out the locals and is averaging 3.9 points in 10.1 minutes per game.
SJU Women drop sixth straight
Junior guard Rasheedah Brown scored 20 points and forward Katrina Johns added 10 points and six rebounds but it wasn't enough as the St. John's women's basketball team dropped its sixth straight game, 66-54 at Syracuse University Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm, which shot 29.8 percent (17-for-57) from the field and 25 percent (3-for-12) from three-point range, fall to 5-11 and 0-5 in the Big East.
Led by Julie McBride, who scored 15 points, Leaf Newman who netted 14 points, and Paula Moore, who added 13 points, Syracuse improved to 8-7 and 2-3 in the conference.
After heading to No. 11 Rutgers (10-4, 4-2) Tuesday night, St. John's hosts Pittsburgh (8-9, 2-4) Saturday at 2 p.m.
Red Storm men's swimming team win pair, women drop two
The St. John's men's swimming team remains undefeated, improving to 8-0 with wins over Rutgers and Seton Hall, while the Red Storm women fell to the Scarlet Knights and the Pirates at the Rutgers/Scarlet Aquatic Club Friday night. The women dropped to 4-5.
On the men's side, sophomore Greg Danner set a pair of Big East records, winning the 200-yard fly in 1:51.94 and the 400-yard individual medley in 4:06.66.
Freshman Michal Szapiel also set a Big East record winning the 200-yard free in 1:43.19 and later was part of the winning 200-yard free relay.
Juniors Danilo Perunovic and Jack Savvi also broke conference marks as Perunovic won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.11 and Savvi finished the 100-yard butterfly in 49.60.
On the women's side, freshman Laura Nuudi won the 100-yard backstroke in a Big East record 1:00.46. She also set a conference mark when she won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:08.90.
