The New York State Champion Long Island Edge captured the bronze medal at the Northeast Regional PeeWee Ice Hockey Tournament last weekend (March 16- 18) at Biddeford Maine.
The Edge, who repeated as state tier III title winners earlier this month in upstate Cortland, blew past state champions from Vermont, 4-0, Massachusetts, 3-2, and Connecticut, 2-0). But the team stumbled in the semi-final match, losing 3-2 to the Atlantic champs. Marc Sausa, of College Point, scored two goals in the loosing effort.
“What a great run,” said head coach Mike Kavanagh, who retires at the end of the season with two state titles under his belt. “This is a great group of kids who played good solid hockey all year to reach the final four of PeeWee hockey.”
Sausa is one of eight Queen youngsters on the team that plays out of the Port Washington Skating Rink and the Parkwood Rink in Great Neck. The local boys include Greg Avellino, of Fresh Meadows, Charlie Foulds and Matt McCloskey, of College Point, Steven Buccellato, of Whitestone, Chris Massi, of Jackson Heights, Michael Kavanagh, of Little Neck, and Andy Steinmann, of Douglaston. The remainder of the squad is made up of 12- and 13-year-old players from Nassau County.
