With 2.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime and the game tied at 52, St. Francis Prep junior Dawn Gorynski stepped to the line with the chance to send the Terriers into the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens title game.
After missing the first free throw, she drained the second and St. Francis Prep edged Bishop Kearney, 53-52 in a double-overtime thriller at St. Francis College Sunday.
Despite an inflamed tendon in her right foot, Gorynski scored a game-high 21 points for Prep (20-6), including six in the two overtime periods, to send the Terriers into the championship game Saturday at 5 p.m. at St. Francis College against Queens rival Christ the King, which defeated Bishop Loughlin 70-29 in the other semifinal game.
The win also solidified the Terriers’ spot as the division’s Class B representative in the state Catholic tournament.
St. Francis Prep led throughout but a jumper by Meredith McLoughlin and a free throw by Caitlin Boyle — who led her team with 17 points — gave Kearney (19-7) a 40-37 lead with 17.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
But Terriers junior guard Liz Yuneman answered with a clutch corner three-pointer with 3.6 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Christ the King 70, Bishop Loughlin 29. With All-American Clare Droesch, Jennifer Dawson and Melanie Mangone out of the lineup for their part in a reported fight on Christ the King property last week, the Royals still won easily to advance to their 16th consecutive diocesan championship game.
In their absence, Christine Catalanotto led the way with 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while Cigi McCollin and Chantel Moore added 12 points apiece for Christ the King (25-1). Danielle Chambers had nine points for Loughlin (15-10).
The altercation reportedly involved two Grover Cleveland students, the three members of the Royals’ girls’ basketball team and seven other Christ the King students. Droesch, Dawson and Mangone were suspended from the basketball team until March 12.
St. John’s Prep 47, Nazareth 22. Lora Morton scored 14 points and Amy Mascia added 12 to lead the Red Storm in a CHSAA Division II semifinal game at St. Francis College Sunday. St. John’s Prep will face Fontbonne Hall, which defeated St. Agnes, Saturday at 3 p.m. in the championship game at St. Francis College.
