A very Happy Birthday to Robert Graziano and congratulations to Carol and Richard Reilly on their 32nd anniversary.
The Association for the Advancement of Blind and Retarded, Inc. and The New York Child Learning Institute held their 45th Anniversary Dinner Dance honoring George Andreozzi, Fleet Bank and Dominic Cefalu, Omni Office Systems at the Terrace on the Park, Flushing Meadow Park. The affair was attended by over 600 people. The many gifts and raffle baskets were a joy to behold. Christopher Weldon, executive director, greeted all the guests and made sure that everything was running smoothly. Bernadette LaMagna was diligently working selling raffles and adding to the successful event. One of their recent major events was the opening of Wellington Hall in November 2000, dedicated to: “That each life may find meaning.”
At the 10th annual awards dinner recognizing the contributions of social workers of Queens took place at Queens Borough Hall on Friday, March 23. The honorees were Krishan Kalra, MSW, Queens Hospital Center; Linda Leest, CSW, Ph.D, Services Now for Adult Persons; Sara Socher, DSW, H.G. Birch Early Childhood Center; Harold Eisenberg, BSW; and Evelyn Pliego, Student Award winner. The event was sponsored by Queensboro Council for Social Welfare, Borough President Claire Shulman, United Way of New York City, and the National Association of Social Workers, New York City Chapter.

Nick Hornby, best-selling author of “Speaking with the Angel,” has arranged to have all proceeds of U.S. sales of his book donated to the New York Child Learning Institute in College Point, the area’s premiere educational center for children with autism. The 233-page paperback retails for $12 and is available at Barnes & Noble.
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2001 the International Year of Volunteers. Celebrations are being planned throughout the world to honor volunteers and highlight the great work that they do. Those of us who work with programs which use volunteer services, are very much aware of the outstanding and important role volunteers play. We know that many of these programs could not meet the needs oof their communities without the help of volunteers who give their time and talents so selflessly. A group of Queens agencies has joined with the Queens Directors of Volunteers in Agencies to plan a day of celebration in honor of Queens volunteers. Queens is the most culturally diverse county in the U.S. and possibly in the world. We are reaching out to all ethnic, racial and religious groups to invite their participation in the planning process and to include their volunteers in this recognition.
On Sunday, June 3, from noon to 5 p.m., a day of celebration will take place in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Please help make this day a success. If you know of an individual who performs volunteer duties but is not affiliated with a participating organization, please submit their name and appropriate verification for inclusion in the journal. At the Whitestone Lanes, our perennial 202-plus, Maureen Pupplo, was in true form. It was difficult to believe that Barbara Niegerball “only” got 196. She has been bowling over 200 for weeks.
The College Point Memorial Day Parade will be Sunday, May 27. If you would like to volunteer for this worthy parade, please call Chairman Fred Mazzarello at 939-3393. Remember to honor our veterans. The Grand Marshal is Mike Abel and Gloria Palma is the Poppy Queen.
College Point Road Runners: The 23rd annual Queens Half-Marathon and the Skaggs-Walsh 5K Run will be Saturday, April 14. Race will start at 121st Street on Poppenhusen Avenue (MacNeil Park) at 8 a.m.

SABINA SAYS: With the coming of Passover, which begins at sundown, Saturday, April 7, and Easter, April 15, families will gather together. Of course, the children will look forward to collecting candy, chocolate bunnies and hunt for colored Easter eggs. I still enjoy watching the children do this and hold my hand out for the leftovers.
