Cardozo garners No. 3 seed in citywide softball playoffs

Cardozo is the top seeded Queens team in the PSAL softball playoffs, which was scheduled to start Tuesday. The Judges, champions of Queens III, are seeded No. 3 behind Staten Island's Tottenville and defending city champs Port Richmond and were slated to face an outbracket winner at Cardozo.

Bryant, which easily won the Queens I title, picked up the No. 5 seed and will face Beach Channel, which defeated Franklin K. Lane, 9-7 in an outbracket game Monday, in the first round. Francis Lewis, which finished just behind Cardozo in what is widely regarded as the toughest division in the city, garnered the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 25 Bronx Science.

Bayside is seeded 11th and will be a tough team to beat. The Commodores host No. 22 Lincoln in the first round. Townsend Harris, the second place finisher in Queens I, is the No. 18 seed and faces 15th-seeded Stuyvesant at Riverbank State Park and John Adams, the champions of Queens weakest division, Queens II, is the 20th-seed and will take on No. 13 Bronx Leadership.

Because of rain, games not played on Tuesday were scheduled for Wednesday. The second round will be played Thursday at Central Park and the quarterfinals are next Tuesday at a site to be determined. The semifinals are scheduled for May 31 at the ASA Complex on Staten Island. The final will also be played at ASA on June 3.

Francis Lewis 7, Bowne 1. Alyssa Schneebaum tossed a two-hitter, striking out 14 and batterymate Lucia Oswald went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Lewis (12-2 Queens III).

Springfield Gardens 8-6, Far Rockaway 7-1. Shavonne Powell delivered the dramatics with a game-winning single to lift the Golden Eagles to an 8-7 win in the front end of a doubleheader. Pitcher Judy Mathieu scattered four hits in the nightcap as Springfield (4-10 Queens II) swept the double dip.

Queens Vocational 11, Newtown 10. Jeanette Tavarez had four hits and Anna Aumuller scored five runs to lead the Tigers (7-7 Queens I).

Jamaica 18, Cleveland 8. Ahsaki Anoky went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Kendesha Farquharson went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run for the Beavers (6-16, 2-12 Queens III).
