Mattone Groups Mite Division began its season coached by referee and former DG player William Rodriguez. The Mites receive instruction in skating and hockey fundamentals. The young players love the game and get a workout twice weekly. Five-year-old Andrew Fierro, a student at PS 169, is playing his first season of hockey. He is a Rangers and Mets fan and enjoys learning the game of hockey.
Minor Division
Erin’s Isle 11, Jesse Halpern Skate & Tennis Shop 8. Erin’s Isle handed Jesse Halpern its first lost of the season. For Jesse Halpern, Spiros Markopolous hit the twine four times, Andrew Doheny skated hard, scoring once and recording three assist, Evan Katz scored a breakaway goal, Dimitrios Savva had an assist, Nick Natsiolaris played a great two-way game, Thomas Doheny was a huge help on the defensive end and Jason Becker continued improving his net-minding skills. For Erin’s Isle, Evan Kundrat netted seven goals and Meaghan Callahan and Connor Browne contributed two goals each.
Jesse Halpern Skate & Tennis Shop 6, Mass Electric 4. In a tight game until the last second, Jesse Halpern held off the charging Mass Electric. For Jesse Halpern, Albert Markopolous scored two goals and played great defense, Alex Palazzolo showed great hustle while recording three assists, Travis Lippert scored a goal on a beautiful move and had an assist, Nick Veljacich continued to improve adding an assist, and Andrew Doheny was superb between the pipes. The Justice boys scored four goals for mass electric with Luke Serkanic proving an additional goal.
McCann’s Rollers 7, Erin's Isle 2. The McCann brothers led the charge with all seven of McCann’s Rollers goals (Sean four, Jimmy three). Chris McCrorie provided the defense in net. Erin’s goals came off the stick of Evan Kundrat.
Jesse Halpern 8, ReMax Universal 2. The powerful Jesse Halpern overwhelmed the young ReMax 8-2. Spiros Markopolis, Travis Lippert and Evan Katz buried the biscuit twice and Albert Markopolis and Alex Palazzolo each contributed a goal. ReMax’s offense came of the sticks of Jeffrey Johnston and Melanie Binanti.
Major Division
Gary Mann Productions 5, Corona Park Pork store 5. After getting scored on quickly and being down 3-0 at the end of the first period, Corona Park came back with goals by Keith Lippert (2), Anthony Yacovone, Johnny Pagano and Paul Giacomino, his first goal of the season. The defensive leaders of the team included goalie Stevie Mare and defensemen Douglas Glendenning, Alex Doulaveris, and Patrick Brennan. At the end of regulation time, the score was tied at 5-5, and a five-minute overtime left the two teams deadlocked, awaiting their next meeting. Providing the offense for Gary Mann were Guy Seminerio (3), Mike McCann and Joey May.
Corona Park Pork Store 11, Point Furniture 5. A see-saw battle heading into the second period saw the two teams very close, until Corona Park tightened its defense and stopped the barrage of shots that Point Furniture, led by Sal Pinto, hurled at their goal. Steven Mare came back strong to stop several scoring chances, with much help from defensemen Douglas Glendenning, Danny Cochran and Keith Lippert. Goals were contributed by Willie Yumet (3), Alex Doulaveris (2), Johnny Pagano (2) and one each by Anthony Yacovone, Keith Lippert, Mike Coppola and Ariel DiPasquale. Corona Park played an exceptionally unselfish game, with excellent passing and strong positional play leading to an 11-5 triumph.
Senior Division
NY Party Plaza.com 10, Transcreen 9. The score was 3-3 after the first period and 6-6 after the second. Transcreen scored first in the third period only to see Party Plaza score the next four goals. Transcreen’s offense was provided by James Justice with four goals, Kenny McCrorie with two goals and Cory McGrath, Matt Novak and Joey Somers with a goal apiece. Scoring for Party Plaza were Mike DePasquale with four goals, Keith Cropper and George Carrol with two goals and Steven Licul and Cassad with one goal each.
NY Party Plaza.com 13, Transcreen 9. In their second meeting of this early season, Transcreen fell short to Party Plaza.com. Party Plaza took an early 6-1 lead. Transcreen made a valiant effort at a come back, but time ran out. Transcreen was led by the two-way play of Matt Novak, with a hat trick, and James Justice, with a goal and an assist. Tommy Werthmuller, Sean Doheny, Cory McGrath, Jonathan Thomas and Kevin Gugliamoni each contributed a goal. For Party Plaza, Steven Licul and James Kozakis each scored two goals.
Sambucci Brothers 7, Statewide Merchandising 2. For Sambucci Bros., Anthony Mainolfi netted two goals, while older brother Joe Mainolfi scored a goal. Statewide’s goals came off the sticks of Matt Lupoli and Andrew Kunhle.
Transcreen 5, Pizza Chef 5. In an excellent hockey game, Transcreen & Pizza Chef skated to a tie. Goalies Chris Rodriguez (Transcreen) and Robert DiMasi (Pizza Chef) kept their teams in the game with some terrific play between the pipes. Tommy Werthmuller scored two goals for Transcreen and Kenny McCrorie, Matt Novak and Cory McGrath each contributed a goal. For Pizza Chef, Marcus Britto scored a hat trick and Steve Whelan and Tim Caffrey scored a goal apiece.
