Cross Island YMCA soccer tournament comes to close

By The TimesLedger

Eight weeks of soccer fun culminated on June 24, with an Olympic-style closing ceremony. Forty-four youngsters ages 5 through 10 made up the six teams which competed through May and June on the Cross Island YMCA’s backyard field.

The tournament was facilitated by coach Serge Breton, a lifelong soccer enthusiast, former semi-pro and licensed coach and referee. Breton has been sharing his expertise at the Y for the past seven years.

“His enthusiasm and devotion to the children and the sport are outstanding,” said Bernadette Lee, spokesperson for the Y.

Top scorer and MVP for the 5 to 7 age category was 6-year-old David Jimenez of Queens Village. With 10 goals, top scorer for the 8 to 10 age category was Kyle Pereira of Jamaica. Co-MVP's for that division were Stanley Cobos of Queens Village and Lamar Stewart of Hempstead.

In the spirit of YMCA sports, all participants received medals at the closing ceremony. Breton looks forward to an annual tournament, the next one planned for Spring 2002.

“In the meantime, the Y is lucky to have him as Breton devotes his talent and time in the year-round and popular soccer program,” said Lee.

The Cross Island YMCA Sports and Recreation Program follows a standard philosophy, encouraging participating (everyone plays), fun (play for enjoyment), fitness, (a fit child is a happy child), skills (progress shows confidence), teamwork (strength in numbers), fair play (respect others and respect yourself), and family involvement (stronger families means stronger communities).

The Cross Island YMCA is located at 238-10 Hillside Avenue, just west of the Cross Island Parkway. For more information call 479-0505 or drop by the Y to pick up a Program Guide and tour the facility.
