Qreview – theater: Queens College offers enthusiastic ‘Godspell’

By Anita Raymon

The classic musical “Godspell” — a modern take on the Gospel set in a junkyard — was given a good treatment by Queens College Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance Saturday evening at the Little Theatre on campus.

This is a philosophical and heartwarming show based on Jesus’ early sermons and parables, with the message that love should guide everything in human affairs. Jesus appears as a clown with tear drops on his face, dressed in a Superman T-shirt, suspenders, white duck pants, and sneakers. He preaches in a junkyard to a group of clowns, dressed in colorful yet modem outfits.

Sometimes they listen intently to the master’s voice; other times their attention span is brief. They have much to talk about among themselves.

The music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, including “Save the People,” “Day By Day,” “By My Side” and “We Beseech Thee,” were beautifully sung by the ensemble cast whose voices rang out in perfect harmony.

Jesus is played by Kevin Schwab who also directs Godspell. Schwab has a melodious tenor voice and was very believable in his role. He also has a powerful and well rounded tone when he speaks — every word was clear and precise. Such precision characterized his directing of the play as well.

The clowns are Shannon Fleischman, Susan Erenberg, Aliza Hirschman, Andrea Kotsay, Polymnia Michaelides, Elaine Rodriguez, Emily Bloch, and the statuesque blonde with the big voice, Alison Schwab, together with David Arzberger. Also, Steve Callahan makes his debut as John the Baptist and Judas. He has appeared in many community shows including “A Shot in the Dark” and “The Music Man.” Alison Schwab had performed in the Parkside Players’ presentation of “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” as Bobbi Michele.

The enthusiasm of the players is infectious, helped in no small way by a musical group under the baton of Richard Louis Pierre. The packed audience was clearly well satisfied with the evening’s entertainment.

The next presentation at Queens College will be Aaron Copeland’s Opera “Tender Land” in the spring.
