Eleanor Haynes, a longtime Jamaica resident and veteran journalist, died of cancer Sept. 17 at her son’s home in Apple Valley, Calif. She was 72.
Haynes, the daughter of Joseph and Alma Crenshaw of Warrenton, Ga., spent most of her life in Queens and graduated from Queens College.
For 32 years, Haynes wrote a weekly column called “The Haynes Report” for Queens Voice, now known as the New York Voice.
She also spent 18 years as the director of public affairs and community relations at Coler Memorial Hospital on Roosevelt Island before retiring and starting her own media consulting company, E.L.H. Enterprises.
“She was an example of what one determined, talented, caring individual can do for our community and for mankind,” said Ben Hickman, a former executive for Coler Memorial Hospital. “Eleanor will be remembered as a caring and compassionate friend.”
Haynes is survived by her son, Jeffrey Thomas, and daughter-in-law, Penny Thomas, of Apple Valley, Calif.; a sister, Lena Duval, of Westbury, L.I.; three grandchildren: Jessica Thomas, Jeffrey Thomas, Jr. and Samantha Thomas; and several extended family members.
