BAYSIDE — The 111th Police Precinct in Bayside urged drivers to be cautious around construction areas in the northeast Queens precinct’s area because of the increased risk of accidents, Community Affairs Officer Anthony Lombardi said.
The 111th Precinct includes Bayside, Little Neck, Douglaston, Oakland Gardens, Hollis Hills and parts of Flushing and Auburndale.
Lombardi said there has been an increase in accidents in some construction areas in the area.
At least two major projects are going on within the precinct, including the reconstruction of the Long Island Expressway-Cross Island Parkway interchange and the rebuilding of entrance/exit ramps between the LIE and the Clearview Expressway.
Cause of infant’s death in Douglaston not known
DOUGLASTON — A baby died at home in Douglaston Sunday morning from unknown causes, police said.
Police were called when it was discovered the six-week-old boy was not breathing at about 11 a.m. Sunday, police said. The infant was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center where he later died.
The city medical examiner was to determine the cause of death, police said.
Fake money circulating in Bayside, says merchant
BAYSIDE — Bayside bookstore owner Jack Oshier warned of counterfeit money being used on Bell Boulevard this past week at the monthly Community Board 11 meeting Monday night.
Oshier, owner of The Book Shop, said he knew of at least four businesses which had received fake $100 and $50 bills in the same week.
Oshier said merchants were within their rights to refuse large bills, especially if they suspect the bills are fake.
One killed, another hurt in Elmhurst park attacks
ELMHURST — One man was killed and another was stabbed Sunday afternoon at a park in Elmhurst, police said.
One of the victims, 19, whose name was not released, was shot once in the head and stabbed in the neck and body, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, 22, was stabbed three times in the torso and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
The attacks, which occurred about 4 p.m. Sunday, took place in a park directly in front of the entrance to Elmhurst Hospital at the intersection of Broadway and 41st Avenue.
As night began to fall and police investigators searched Frank D. O’Connor Playground for clues about the violence, a crowd huddled around the iron bars of the park’s fence.
Some longtime residents said that trouble at the park was not unusual.
Cash, checks taken in St. John’s burglary
FRESH MEADOWS — An office at St. John’s University was burglarized Friday night, police said.
Entry to the office in the Collection Department was gained by breaking through a window, police said.
A safe was forced open and checks and cash were taken, police said.
Police were investigating.
Boy hit, killed by car backing out in Hollis
HOLLIS — A toddler was killed in Hollis Friday when a neighbor accidentally ran into the child with a car while backing out of a driveway, police said.
Two-year-old Zuri Paulino, who lived near 187th Street, was walking with his uncle at about 11:45 a.m. Friday when the driver apparently did not see the child behind his uncle, police said.
The boy was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
Police did not say whether the driver was issued any summonses.
‘Corrections officer’ arrested on 43rd Ave.
ELMHURST — An Elmhurst man was arrested and charged with criminal impersonation early Saturday morning when he allegedly pretended to be a corrections officer, police said.
The suspect, Cristian Aquirre, 26, of 41-39 Forley Ave., pulled over an undercover police officer on patrol in an unmarked car near Junction Boulevard and 43rd Avenue in Elmhurst, police said.
When the undercover officer challenged Aquirre and asked for police identification, the suspect could not produce any and was arrested, police said.
Police said Aquirre admitted he was not a corrections officer.
