The OLS fifth-grade girls’ offensive machine took awhile to get into gear on Sunday, as an aggressive St. Luke’s defensive effort held OLS to only two first half baskets. Snows defense was working well though, as OLS led 7-2 at halftime at Imma
Snows started off the third quarter with a scoring flurry to go up 13-2 on baskets by Tina Khiani and Nicole Kaouris. Snows poured in 11 third-quarter points to lead 18-8 heading to the fourth quarter.
Nicole Kaouris led the balanced OLS scoring attack with six points. Nicole Weinman, Tina Khiani and Christine Wrynn each scored four points, Adara Simonelli tallied three points, Michelle Gasperetti scored two and Kaitlin Frangella added a free throw to round out the scoring. Christine Wrynn also contributed to the overall team effort.
The victory improved Snows’ unblemished record to 4-0. The girls face Sts. Joachim & Anne in Queens Village and St. Gregory’s in Bellerose next weekend.
The two sixth-grade boys basketball teams from Our Lady of the Snows hooked up in a defensive battle this past weekend. The team, coached by Ed Paroulek, started slow, but finished strong. They were down by three at the end of the first quarter, five at halftime, but closed to within one at the end of the third quarter. Paroulek’s team then outscored Jose Dilan’s team 5-2 in the fourth quarter to win 13-11.
The leading scorers for the Paroulek team were Ray Potestio with six, Ryan Paroulek with three and Anthony Civitano and Alex Rydzewskieach with two apiece. The defense was led by Billy Fitzgerald, Jorel Phelps, Leroy Herbert, Kevin McMurray, Nicholas Walker and Jonathan Dupuy. For Dilan’s team, Gabriel Gomez and Justin Dilan each scored four points, Christian Venturella had two and Michael Wang added one.
The Paroulek team is now 2 – 0 and faces a very good St Greg’s team next weekend.
The OLS eight grade boys team, coached by Joe Conway, opened the 2001-2002 season with a thrilling 40-39 win. The boys, playing in the Flushing South Section, opened against a tough Holy Family team. OLS jumped out quickly to a 10–2 lead, but a game Holy Family charged back and took a 16–11 halftime lead. OLS again took another lead going into the fourth quarter, but Holy Family made another comeback and tied the game at 39 with only four seconds to go. However, a clutch free throw by Roland Salazar with only one second remaining gave Snows the victory. Greg Conway led all scorers with 19 points, as Salazar added 12 and Thomas McCarthy had five. Louis Pinamonti and Brian Dietrich had two points apiece. Pinamonti was a bull on the boards for OLS, while Patrick Parrino, Anthony Costanzo, Frankie Diaz and Richardson Slyvain did a great job defensively. The boys’ next game is Saturday against OLBS.
Our Lady of the Snows second-grade soccer team ended the season this past weekend with their best effort of the year against St. Greg’s. The leading scorers for the team this season were Danny Graham and Steven Pelan. The team received excellent goaltending during the season from Ashley Tolento, Samatha Roquim and Michael Ciminera. The forwards played hard all year and were lead by the strong play of Lindsay Gately, Kaitln Biscotti, Quelsy Medina, Sasha McFadden and Joey Costanzo. Thomas Pistone, Evelyn Morales, Ryan Barrello, Dillan Chu and Shannon Wallace all played defense and midfield throughout the season. This was the first year this team played games and they showed steady improvement each week.
