January has been very busy and even the little snow to color the sidewalks didn’t mar the attendance at any of the events.
William Wick was chairman of the Dan Harlin Benefit Fund which held a fund-raiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall, St. Ambrose Council No. 1463, in College Point. Dan Harlin was born and raised in College Point. For the past 11 years Danny was a New York City firefighter stationed in Manhattan. He died in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. Dan left his wife, Debbie; three young children ages 9, 6 and 3; two brothers, Jimmy and Bobbie; and a sister, Joan. Danny’s parents currently live out of state but his father, Wilbur Harlin, is a past grand knight of the St. Ambrose Council.
The benefit was a success and, even though the weather was not good, the attendance was wonderful. You couldn’t get another person in with a shoehorn. Donations of food came from Supreme Deli, Whitepoint Pizza, K&M Deli, Waldbaum’s, Ralph’s Deli, Linda’s Kitchen, Jetro, College Meat Center, Coscarino’s Pizza, Corona Park, College Point Deli, Chris Fox, Coppolas Pizza, Stork’s Bakery, Brookside Deli, Gean Heslin, Irene & Sal’s Bakery, La Cheesecake, Continental Pastry, H&H Beer Dist., Mama Maria Pizza, Franklin Printing and St. Ambrose Council.
Raffle prizes for the event were donated by George Sauer, Sean and Margaret Corraugton, Charlie and Eileen Foulds, Bobby McCabe, John Kelly, Glenn Puppa, Lenny Cesare, Joe and Mannie O’Hagan, Billy and Roe Wick, 5 Corners Restaurant, Starbucks, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Target, Modell’s Sporting Goods, Shamrock Party Boat, Toys R Us, Circuit City, Baseball Plus, Ernestos Restaurant, Henry Wick, the Podmore Family, Pete and Karen O’Hagan, and Doris McFeely.
Proceeds from the event will be given to his wife and children.
Laraine Memola had a wonderful post-holiday party. Her son Sean made it the success that it was. It was a holiday memorial with the Christmas tree all decorated in red, white and blue and little American flags. Her three dogs, Dusti Rose, Darla Joy and Skip, all had huge American flag bows on and were well-behaved with the guests. They are all used to special attention.
St. Paul’s Church and School is sponsoring a Mardi Gras party Saturday, Feb. 9. A donation of $20 is requested. Please call the office at 762-4100 for reservations. Costumes are encouraged.

St. Agnes High School Parents Association presents “A Night at the Races” Saturday, Feb. 9, in the auditorium at 123rd Street and 14th Avenue. SABINA SAYS — Congratulations to Stephanie Santiago who has been voted Poppy Queen for the 2002 College Point Memorial Day Parade, which will be held Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m. Stephanie is 8 years old and attends St. Fidelis School. She loves playing in the gym. She has a sister, Lauran, 11, also in St. Fidelis and a 3-year-old brother, Joseph.
