A Woodside woman died Friday morning from injuries she sustained when a van careened out of control in Herald Square and crashed into a Queens bus the previous afternoon, making her the seventh fatality in the city’s deadliest pedestrian accident in a decade.
Young Kim, 60, of 60-11 Broadway, died Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Six others were killed in last Thursday’s accident, which transformed a Manhattan intersection that had been teeming with post-holiday shoppers into a scene of bloody chaos.
The driver of the van, Sidney Weinstein, 76, of Valley Stream, L.I.., has not been criminally charged, police said.
The incident began when Weinstein, a delivery truck driver for World Wide Distributing Services, was ordered by a police officer to move his van out of an illegal parking spot on 34th Street.
But the van suddenly lurched forward and headed west, jumping a curb and crossing back into the intersection before crashing into the back of a bus that had just turned right onto 6th Avenue from 34th Street, police said.
The bus was operated by Queens Surface Corp., a Flushing-based company that runs express service into Manhattan.
Some of the victims were pinned between the two vehicles and others were caught underneath them, according to published reports.
Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others died shortly thereafter at Bellevue Hospital.
Kim survived through the night but died Friday morning.
The accident was the deadliest in New York City in at least a decade, The New York Times reported.
Weinstein told police the van’s accelerator struck when he tried to move from his illegal parking spot, published reports said.
Herald Square, a busy shopping district that is home to such stores as Macy’s, Victoria’s Secret and H&M, once ranked as the city’s fourth most dangerous intersection but was reconfigured last year to make it safer.
