Quantum Feet to hold 5K run for Steppingstone Day School

By The TimesLedger

The third annual Quantum Feet Road Runners Benefit 5K Run/Walk and Children’s Fun Run is set for Sunday, June 9, in Fresh Meadows starting at 9 a.m.

The event, run in cooperation with the College Point Road Runners Track Club, will benefit the Steppingstone Day School of Flushing.

The race starts at 189 Street and Union Turnpike and goes through Cunningham Park’s Green Belt Trail and finishes near the starting line. The 3.1 mile course takes the runners about two miles into the park.

Last year’s winner, Wood haven’s Panifilo Gomez, who covered the course in 16:28, said he will try to defend his title. His brother Hugo, who is also coming off the five-mile boardwalk race in Rockaway Park in the rain, will also enter the Quantum Feet race. They are both running often and very well as of late.

Last year’s race, with 181 finishers, was a big success according to race director Dominic Ortiz.

“We had a good support from the community,” Ortiz said.

Steppingstone is for young children with disabilities and their families. In Steppingstone’s nurturing-child centered environment, children are encouraged to believe in themselves and are motivated to reach their full potential.

Steppingstone had earned a reputation for pioneering progressive approaches in the education of babies and preschoolers with special needs Marked by best practices in early childhood education, a state-of-the-art technology program, a parent support system and continuing education for the staff, Steppingstone continues to expand its menu of programs so that each child’s unique needs can be met.

“The school integrates regular children with special education children,” said Ortiz, who expects a large turnout from the athletes who are staying in shape for the cross-country season.
