Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. So far, the weather has been cool and pleasant but we still haven’t received as much rain as we need. Conservation still is necessary. Cut showers short; fill dish washers and washing machines to capacity before running; sweep sidewalks instead of power washing them with a hose; fill tubs halfway instead of all the way to save 10 to 15 gallons; don’t run the water while shaving, lathering up to wash your hands, washing dishes or brushing your teeth; repair leaky faucets and tightly turn off taps. A slow leak wastes 15 to 20 gallons each day. Don’t open fire hydrants and report street leaks to the Department of Environment Protection via its 24-hour help line, 718-DEP-HELP; an open hydrant can waste a million gallons of drinking water a day. About 1.2 billion gallons of water is used every day in the city. The network of reservoirs that feeds the city is at 40 percent of capacity when it should be 80 percent full. This is the lowest rate since the 1960s. Water conservation measures are absolutely necessary.
The Phoenix Players presented “Move Over, Mrs. Markham” by Ray Cooney and John Chapman. With Sophia Bushong, Rachet Alt, Sarah Anderson, Stefanie Butts, Bob Combeí, Charlie Coniglio, Alice Crotty, Michael Davis and Robert Scott. It was directed by Robert Combeí, with John Squire, assistant director and Anna Wolf, producer. It was nice to see Millie Auletta and Carol Reilly as part of the house staff and the usual congratulations to Reilly on her set designs.
Anchor Astoria Lodge No. 729 held its installation of officers: Bro. James Phillips, Master-Elect; W. George Lenz, Senior Warden; W. William Zaleski, Junior Warden; R.W. Raymond Smith, W. Richard Reilly, Master. Installing officers R.W. Raymond Smith, Master; R.W. Michael Minarczyk, Marshal; and R.W. Everett Klein, Chaplain. Congratulations to all the new officers.
St. John’s University, School of Law, held its commencement for the 2002 academic year. Congratulations to Sean Roman Strockyj, who received a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College. He has worked very hard for his graduation and I am sure his future will be a huge success. It was nice seeing Stephen Mills from New York Hospital of Queens attending his daughter’s graduation at St. John’s.
Sabina says: It was a complete delight to see the attendance at the College Point Memorial Day Parade. It was our biggest parade and very well attended, as it should have been, to honor those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center.
