Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. Just about everyone enjoyed the wonderful fireworks displays and celebrating America’s freedom by united we stand.
I held my meeting of the College Point Civic/Taxpayers Association at the VFW. I wish to thank Commander Jim Reilley for use of the hall. Although it was raining heavily, there was standing-room only. Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn and her chief of staff were very effective in answering questions from the floor, as was Community Affairs Officer KisuKim and Tyler Cassel, president of the North Flushing Civic Association. Just about everyone is against the “as of right” in building, lack of parking for cars with new housing that has no garage or “on-site” parking and commercial parking on streets overnight.
These problems will be pursued in future meetings, as well as lack of attention to parks with the exception of volunteers and the timetable of the sports fields for our many youngsters.
Effective July 1, glass and plastic recycling was suspended. The following items no longer are accepted: all glass items, including bottles and jars; all plastic items, including bottles and jugs; and all beverage cartons. Recycling bins or bags containing any of these items will be left at the curb. Continue to recycle mixed paper in clear bags and green labeled bins, just as before. Recycle metal in clear bags or your existing blue labeled bins. Five cents deposit: Continue to return bottles and cans to the store for a refund. Children under 14 have to wear a helmet when riding scooters or their parents will get a $50 fine. A new state law went into effect. Children under 8 must be supervised by an adult.
Do not leave young children in a car by themselves as you run into a store. Two children died from suffocation due to the heat this week.
First Reformed Church, 119th Street and 14th Avenue, will be having a chicken barbecue on Wednesday, July 17, from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Adults $7.50, Children $4. On the menu is chicken, baked beans, salad and watermelon. Reservations are required. Home fire safety – Install smoke detectors. Test them often to make sure they work. Replace the batteries at least twice a year. Have a fire escape plan. Develop a plan with your family about what to do in case of an emergency. Have a prearranged meeting place for your family somewhere outside. Conduct a safety inspection of potential fire hazards in the home and eliminate them. Check room to room to make sure none exists.
Congratulations to Matt Summa, who earned his law degree from Fordham University and to his brother, David, who received his engineering degree from Polytechnic University. Mother Chris will receive her education degree in January from St. John’s University.
